Frequently asked questions

Is Counselling Confidential?

The work we do together is totally confidential.  If we are working face to face, there will be no one listening to you – it will be just you and I in the room. If our work is done over the phone or online, I will be working in my counselling room and the same situation will apply. There may be some occasions when I will need to tell someone else about what we have talked about, these are legal requirements or if I am worried about your safety.  I will talk about this more as part of our contract of working together.

How Do I Know If I Need Counselling?

Counselling is helpful for someone experiencing a complex issue of any kind, whether it’s a relationship, recent bereavement, issues with their body, abuse, depression, or anger. Even if nothing in particular is wrong, but you nonetheless don’t feel good inside yourself, counselling is a place where you can get to the bottom of this feeling. In other words: anyone would benefit from counselling.

How Many Sessions Do I Need?

Naturally, this varies from person to person and depends on the problem you come to counselling with. In some cases where there is a specific crisis, you might only need one or two sessions, but if you are dealing with a more complex, deeply rooted issues, I recommend at least eight sessions or more, as this gives us a chance to develop a therapeutic relationship and get to what lies behind the problem you are facing.

How Often Should I Have Sessions?

Generally, I see clients once a week, due to the way that this continuity allows us to foster a good therapeutic relationship. I understand that sometimes it can be difficult to attend weekly sessions due to having a busy life and I offer the flexibility where possible accommodate changes. I can, in cases of crisis intervention, offer two sessions a week if needed

Can I Bring Someone With Me?

I understand that going to counselling for the first time can feel daunting, and if you feel you would like a person to present in the initial session, that is absolutely fine. In regular sessions I would recommend working on a one-to-one basis.

Is Online or Telephone Counselling Less Effective?

I believe that it is just as effective as working face to face, in fact some people prefer working over the phone to face to face. This service is for you and therefore it is important you are comfortable with whatever arrangement suits you the best.

How Do I Pay for Sessions?

Payment can be made via bank transfer, cash, or cheque. For cancellations or rescheduling, please give me a minimum of 48 hours’ notice, otherwise you will be obligated to pay for the session in full.

My practice is a place for young people and adults to receive a form of support that suits their needs. If you are struggling in any way and wish to know more about how counselling can help, feel free to give me a call or email at any time and I’ll be happy to answer any questions about counselling in Farnham, Guildford, and online.
